and-and-done-evernightpublishing-JayAheer2016-smallpreviewWhen I met Drew at that damn wedding our chemistry was off the charts. All he could offer was the weekend, but uncharacteristically, I jumped at it. When he slipped away like a thief in the night I was blindsided by loss, even knowing people don’t fall in love at first sight! He left me a lifelong reminder though, one to make its appearance in about seven months. Too bad he’d never know…

She was always on my mind, and I couldn’t afford the distraction in this forsaken country where one false move could mean my death. My sniper training dissolved when I thought about Katie and our time together. I was a one and done kind of guy, but this time it was different. I’d be stateside in a few months and offer the apology she deserved. Maybe she’d forgive me, if there wasn’t another man in her life…

Story Excerpt

The equally pale piece of paper took shape against the quartz countertop when I set the cup down. My breath shortened and something central in my chest tightened. Fingers creeping across the smooth surface, I inched the note closer. Block printing in a heavy, masculine hand delivered the message with utter clarity.

Katie- Got the call. Deployed sooner than expected. Stole a kiss goodbye. I’ll treasure our time together. Drew

My hand drifted up to touch my lips. They trembled and I pressed them firm, sucking in a lungful of air through my nose. I was such a treasure that people abandoned me. A mirthless laugh escaped past my hand and I swiftly catalogued the situation, regaining control. Attended a wedding and met a hot guy. Fucked said guy. So what? Lots of women hooked up, nothing surprising. Had great sex. No harm, no foul. After all, he’d set the parameters upfront. One … and done.

Picking the note up by a corner, I carried it over to the trash and dropped it in, then poured the remaining coffee down the sink. Best not to think about all the confidences shared during the recovery times, or the laughter and easy banter. The way I thought we’d connected past the fucking. Sex didn’t have to make things awkward, right? And now, if I felt like yesterday’s bread, well, I’d done it to myself. And my name was Kate.

Checking the time, I hurried to pull out some clothes suitable for brunch. My girlfriends met in half an hour and I had no reason to miss it today. No need to mention how I’d filled the better part of the weekend either. I yanked the bedding off the mattress and wadded it up, jamming the linens into the hamper. My housekeeper would take care of the rest.

Adding a spritz of citrus, I smoothed the sundress over my thighs, then grabbed my purse. Moving on.

Marvelous Monday Reads: Insurmountable

Happy Monday, folks! Today I have Allyson Young on to talk about her new book Insurmountable, now available from Evernight Publishing and other online retailers of erotic romance. Take it away, Allyson!

Thank you for having me today and sharing my new release with your readers! Insurmountable, an erotic suspense, releases November 23, 2015 from Evernight Publishing.

Insurmountable-evernightpublishing-JayAheer2015-smallpreviewKidnapped because of her father’s wrongdoings, Bianca Fontaine is interrogated for any hint of his whereabouts by a man she has no reason to be drawn to. Who falls for their kidnapper? Especially an arrogant, hard man who is bound by duty—with those intriguing soft and caring qualities he hates to show. She’s learned the truth about her mother’s disappearance and her reality is suspect, except for the one constant—Ellis Valiant.

Ellis Valiant is indeed a hard man, but he’s already destroyed Bianca’s world and could make it worse if he doesn’t send her away. But when he finds her exploring her submissive side in the sex club fronting for his organization, his noble efforts fall by the wayside and he steps up as her Dom. Except Ellis harbors a secret, an insurmountable one, and Bianca will surely hate him when it comes to light.

Story Excerpt

Her head felt packed with puffed cotton and there was a definite thump in her temples. Bianca tried to swallow and the dryness made her grimace. She managed to get her right hand to obey her and cautiously reached to touch her head. It was present and accounted for, and the headache ratcheted up to a drumroll. Lord, she felt horrible and thought she might be sick. As she struggled to rise up on one elbow, the pinch of soreness made her wince, and a few things came back in one breath stealing surge.

“Here.” Ellis’s voice intruded and he leaned in to where she could see him through barely cracked eyelids. He had a glass of water in his hand and her body cried out for the moisture. Then she wondered what else was in it and held back, closing her mouth tightly.

“It’s only water.” He took a sip and offered it again, but she wasn’t touching anything anyone here offered. Ellis stared impassively.

With a start, she remembered the restraints, and realized she was no longer held in place. With nothing to prevent it, she rolled sluggishly away from him, and slipped off the bed, nearly falling, but somehow braced her weight against the mattress. She watched him warily, and aside from the straight line his mouth drew, he remained impassive.

Setting the glass down, he motioned to it and some towels on the nightstand. “I thought you’d want to wipe your face and quench your thirst when you … woke.”

Ah, more euphemisms. She felt her upper lip lift in a sneer and hoped Ellis marked it. Thoughts whirled through her head and she couldn’t grab onto one of them. She then judged the distance to the bathroom and wondered if her wobbly legs would get her there before Ellis intercepted her.

As if reading her mind, he stood. “You’ll be on your ass and I’m not letting you hurt yourself.”

A burble of incongruous laughter erupted from her belly and she tasted bile as she backed away. “You’re such a joke.”

Ellis was on her, that something unfamiliar now flashing across his face, and he scooped her up, déjà vu, only hustled her straight to the toilet. On her knees, Bianca retched, but miraculously everything settled without humiliating her further, and she dragged herself up with Ellis’s help. The chill of the porcelain bowl helped her focus.

“Stubborn wench.”

Flipping the lid down, he sat her on it with a thump, telling her to lean back. He grabbed a towel and wet one end of it. She accepted it and covered her face, willing him to leave. How had she ever thought to best this man at anything? Or shame him, for that matter, in appealing to his conscience. He was made of granite, now any need for the soft sell was over. It might be the aftereffects of the truth drugs, but she once again felt like a child. She knew he was still standing there. She could feel him and smell him, that scent she was beginning to associate with Ellis, like she was his dog or something. A bizarre vision of her in a collar, panting at his feet,

“You need a shower.”

Well, thank you, Captain Obvious. She longed to say that out loud but it might unlock the tenuous hold she had on all the things yearning to spill out—and peel the flesh from Ellis’s very bones. Like that would ever happen. So she bit her tongue, because she’d already called him a joke. Enough said.

“Save me from pretentious twits.” She heard him murmur it, as though he’d gritted his teeth.

A startled yelp escaped as Ellis took two strides and ripped her shirt open. Buttons popped free and pinged off the sparkling surfaces. One ricocheted off her forehead and she blinked. So not like the romance books. Gah, what was in those drugs?

“Get your jeans off unless you want me to do it.”

Scrabbling to pull the sides of her shirt together over her chest, she watched as he worked the taps, opening them wide and adjusting the spray of the shower until he appeared satisfied. The way his brows drew together when he turned to see her still fully dressed made her shiver. She loosened her grip on her shirt and fumbled with the snap on her jeans. It refused to give and her heart leapt into her throat when Ellis, with an impatient grunt, pushed her hands aside and freed it without any problem, tugging the zipper down.

“Up.”

She giggled this time, unable to contain the sound, and felt her eyes go wide at the incongruous sound. Sit. Stay. Down. Good doggie. She managed to stand, once again with help, and Ellis dragged her jeans to her ankles.

“You’re still impaired.”

Thank you, Mr. Observant. Maybe she said that out loud, because he stiffened. But when she dared a look, he was staring at her … panties. His head almost immediately tilted up and he met her gaze. She heard him mutter something about stupidity, and tried to muster up some indignation, but her head throbbed harder and she felt terrible.

Thinking he was trying to hug her, she put her hands between them to push him back, and felt him snap open her bra. She pressed her hands back against the cups and protested. “Don’t.”

“So you’ll talk if your clothes come off. Well, don’t worry about it, sweetheart. There’s nothing left for you to say.” Smirking, Ellis tugged her toward the shower and pushed her inside. “Do you need help?”

“No.” Killing was too good for him. He needed to suffer, and she hoped she found an opportunity to inflict it on him.

Fabulous Friday Reads: Unprofessional

TGIF! Let’s kick off the weekend with Allyson Young’s new Romance on the Go story Unprofessional, now available from Evernight Publishing and other purveyors of fine erotic romance. Take it away, Allyson!

Unprofessional-evernightpublishing-jayaheer2015-banner1

UnprofessionalHannah Evans is personal assistant to the very professional Benjamin Willis, and he keeps her firmly in that role. Her boss is a great man, and if he rewards himself with a large number of blondes, well, even great men can be misguided. Hannah couldn’t ask for anything more in her job—except she’s fallen for her boss. And now Mr. Willis seems to be seeking more than mere pleasure. What if he finds a woman with a beauty and brains? Unable to bear the idea, Hannah submits her resignation. Faced with losing her, Benjamin’s entire being reacts in shock, dismay and outrage, causing him to examine how he actually views Hannah. She has had months to come to terms with her strong emotions while he has had mere hours. But Benjamin is a quick study and discovers his true feelings for the woman who has been right under his nose.

Story Excerpt

“Hannah.” Her name fell harshly from his lips and she blinked several times, appearing to get herself under control. “Tell me why you’re leaving.” Leaving me.

“I appreciate the opportunity,” she nearly whispered. “Seeing as I had no experience.”

“You said that in your letter of resignation,” he agreed. “And I was happy to give it to you. You proved yourself quickly.” He shifted a tad closer and studied the rising color in her cheeks.

“I … I can’t stay on. Big world of opportunity out there and all.”

“You’re not telling me the truth. How bad can it be?”

Giving into an instinctive urge, he grasped her other hand and hauled her close. He locked his gaze with hers when she looked up, startled. “Tell me,” he insisted.

“I can’t.” She nearly whimpered and a good man would have backed off and let her go. He couldn’t find it within himself to do it.

Recognizing he couldn’t force her to confide, he resorted to sneakier tactics. He turned on the charm and cajoled. “Hannah, you’re invaluable to me and I can’t get my head around finding someone to replace you. Is it something I’ve done? Is the salary an issue?”

A shake of her head sent more strands of hair drifting down to her shoulders, these longer than the others, and they rested against the upper swells of her breasts. His stare traced their path before he glanced up to see her eyes wide with surprise. God, she was lovely. Smart, skilled and talented, all woman. Different from—

“Benjamin?” His name wasn’t on Hannah’s lips but spoken at his office door. He recognized that voice. “Benjamin?”

He could only imagine how it looked, his disheveled PA sprawled in a chair, him kneeling at her feet, holding her hands captive and their faces mere inches apart. With an effort, he turned his head and acknowledged his latest fling. Past fling. “Give me a minute, Tiffany.”

Hannah quivered and tried to pull away, but he hung on tightly, willing the tall blonde out of his office.

“I see you’ve already replaced me,” she replied, scorn and anger coloring her voice. At any other time, he might have found her alluring, all flushed with outrage and passion. As usual, Tiffany was dressed to the nines in a body-revealing outfit that displayed her long, slender figure and enhanced breasts to full advantage. But she left him cold, something new, because he rarely tired of his blondes physically, choosing to keep his hookups brief to avoid emotional attachment.

Tiffany sneered at Hannah. “She’s hardly your taste. Pudgy and plain, wouldn’t you say?”

If he hadn’t known to keep hold of Hannah, wrapping his hands around Tiffany’s elegant neck might have been an excellent alternative. “Get out.”

“Gladly. You’re welcome to him, secretary-type. It won’t last, especially as he’s slumming.”

He spared her only enough of a look to ensure she had indeed gone before turning back to Hannah. Who was staring at him with a multitude of emotions washing over her expressive features.

“She’s different than the others.” Well, that was the last thing he expected.

“Excuse me?” He knew he sounded astonished.

“She has a career. So she must use her brain. And she meets all your other criteria.”

Hannah would know, he acknowledged inwardly. Except it appeared she was wrong— his preferences were changing. Had changed. His lower body, and not his now aching knees, was in total agreement. Hannah had been under his nose all this time with her quiet, efficient ways and non-intrusive manner, yet he would bet she knew more about him than he knew about himself. But she was leaving, so obviously didn’t feel the same. No point in opening that door, especially as he lacked the tools. He ground his back teeth against a disappointed growl and clambered to his feet after carefully setting Hannah’s hands on her lap.

“I’m sorry she said those things.”

“Which ones?” She sounded intent, earnest, and peered up at him.

“She insulted you.”

Hannah shrugged and those round breasts lifted higher on her torso. “No comparison. We aren’t even the same species, I don’t think.”

Benjamin laughed. That was the effect Hannah had on him despite all that had just taken place. He felt … happy around her. And there was that shift again. She’d been an enormous part of his life for over a year. He’d spent more time—awake at least—with her than any other person. His laughter faded when he imagined the future without her.
