Queen Danaë of Hellas

Danaë (House Vallis) is the ruler of the kingdom of Hellas, an island kingdom off the coast of the Aquilonian continent. She also holds the title of Empress of the Eastern Sea. She is married to King Matthias IV of Ypres, and is 25 at the beginning of Empress of Storms (Two Thrones 1).

Family

King Cresus, Danaë’s father, died during in a boating accident when Danaë was 24 years old, requiring Danäe to take the throne early and abandon her mage studies. Queen Clarae, Danaë’s mother, died from a broken heart six months after Cresus’s death. Darius, Danaë’s younger twin brother, is a Hellene ambassador. Luna is Danaë’s step-granddaughter through Matthias’s son Lukas and a commoner.

Associates

Danaë’s personal maid is Flavia, who has been with the queen since she was a child.

Magic

Danaë is an Aqua mage, able to command the element of water. Due to her royal duties she earned the title of Magistra later than usual (delayed in part by her magecraft tutor Grand Magister Nikos Pelas trying to blackmail her into bed). Grand High Magistra Ife Jogimo, one of the Four Elements, took over Danaë’s training and raised her to Magistra status.

King Matthias IV of Ypres

Matthias IV (House Laurent) is the ruler of Ypres, a prosperous kingdom on the eastern coast of the Aquilonian continent. He is married to Queen Danaë of Hellas, and is 46 at the beginning of Empress of Storms (Two Thrones 1).

Family

Matthias was married to Queen Hanne (née Pauwels), until her death at age 42. Their son is Lukas, formerly crown prince of Ypres. Hanne’s sister Margot conspired with Lukas to assassinate Matthias with a demon-infested mirror, but the spell backfired and killed Hanne instead. Lukas fled his mother’s revenant ghost, briefly staying in a warded mining village and marrying a commoner named Kaat Andahl, who bore him a daughter named Luna. Lukas managed to escape the ghost, although he lost an eye and was maimed in the process, and is now a monk at a Hellene monastery. After Matthias married Danaë, Margot attempted to overthrow Matthias’s rule, and was killed by her sister’s revenant ghost. Queen Hanne’s uncle Lord Alexandre Pauwels is a powerful nobleman and is often a thorn in Matthias’s side.

Prince Darius of Hellas

Darius (House Vallis) is Danaë’s younger twin brother and is a roving ambassador for Hellas. Handsome, charming, and libidinous, he’s left a trail of broken hearts across the continent. He may or may not have some sort of relationship with Lieutenant Commander Lars Schrader of the Ypresian cavalry.

Prince Marcus of Illium

Marcus is the youngest of three brothers and fourth in line to the throne of Illium.

Lukas (former Crown Prince of Ypres)

Lukas (House Laurent) is King Matthias’s son with Queen Hanne. He was formerly the Crown Prince of Ypres and Queen Danäe’s former betrothed. His aunt Margot seduced him as a boy and conspired with him to assassinate Matthias with a demon-infested mirror, but the spell backfired and killed Hanne instead.

King Cresus of Hellas

Cresus (House Vallis) was Danaë’s father and the late King of Hellas.

Queen Clarae of Hellas

Clarae (House Demetrious) was Danaë’s mother and the late queen of Hellas.

Queen Hanne of Ypres

Hanne (House Pauwels) was Matthias‘s first wife and mother of Lukas. She died during a magical attack by demons bound inside a cheval mirror; the mirror was commissioned by her sister Margot and gifted to Matthias by Lukas in an assassination attempt. When Hanne praised the mirror, Matthias gave it to her. That night, the demons frightened her into a stroke. Because of the manner of her death, she became a revenant ghost who haunted Lukas and chased him across the country, beating and clawing at him each night. Lukas was able to find a brief period of safety while living in the warded mining village of Creswaal, where he met Kat Andaal and married her, fathering Luna.

When the rowan trees surrounding Creswaal were breached, Hanne’s ghost continued chasing Lukas to the coast, where the now-half-blinded and maimed prince took ship to the island monastery of Lis. Danaë was able to capture her ghost in a silvered spirit bottle and took it to the palace at Mons where she turned it loose on Hanne’s murderous sister Margot.

Luna

Luna is the granddaughter of Matthias IV, step-granddaughter of Danaë, and daughter of Lukas and Kat Andaal, daughter of a mining camp accountant.

Family

There is some question about Luna’s legitimacy; her father Lukas claims that he was legally married to her mother Kat, but all record of this has disappeared and the only eyewitnesses are now dead or vanished. If proven legitimate, she can claim a place in the line of succession to the Ypresian throne behind Matthias and Danaë’s second-born child. However, Matthias has not officially recognized her in order to protect her from those in Ypres who would use her for their own ends.

Magic

Luna is also a powerful Aegis mage, able to call up a storm at the age of 18 months and throw Grand Magister Pelas across a room. As she is far too young to control her abilities, she wears an enspelled golden necklace that nullifies her magic for now. There is every sign that she will be trained by Grand High Magister Aegis Epilonious himself when the time comes.
